What is a betterment?
A betterment is an amount placed on a part that was replaced due to the accident, but due to normal wear and tear, the part was soon in need of being replaced anyway. The amount of any betterment is YOUR responsibility to pay. EXAMPLE: As a result of your accident you need your battery replaced. The battery in your vehicle is 2 years old. The insurance company replaces the battery but only pays for say 70% of the replacement cost as opposed to 100% of the replacement cost. Why? Because they only owe to replace what was damaged and they are replacing a battery with 70% of it's useful life left. Another example would be your tire needs to be replaced as a result of the accident. The tire is say a 60,000 mile tire but you have 40,000 miles on the tire. If the replacement cost $90.00 the insurance company would pickup $30 of the $90 leaving you responsible for the remaining $60.00 as a result of the betterment. Betterments are normally allocated to wearable parts, such as tires, batteries, moving suspension parts, exhaust systems and transmissions. Disclaimer: For information purposes only.
