What is "steering"?

Steering, as defined by the Massachusetts Auto Damage Appraisers Licensing Board, is the act of directing a claimant to or away from any specific repair shop or requiring that the repairs be made by a specific repair shop.

STEERING IS ILLEGAL IN MASSACHUSETTS

How do I know if I am being "steered"?

Listen to your claims adjuster speak to you - if you are being told that it will take longer or cost more if you choose your own shop BEWARE, you are probably being steered.  Comments such as those mentioned above and others like "we won't guarantee the work if you don't use a 'preferred' shop or 'we don't pay their rates' or 'we don't work with them' are misleading and usually untrue.  The fact of the matter is ANY Certified, Registered Repair Shop in Massachusetts will work with your insurance company to repair your vehicle to pre-accident condition.  Further, it's the body shop that guarantees the work it does - not the insurance company.  Guaranty Auto guarantees all our work for the life of your vehicle.

Remember also that "Preferred" or "Referral" shops represent the insurance company in both negotiations and the repair of your vehicle.  They contract with the insurance companies regarding the repairs, the costs and the repair procedures.  The insurance company sets the rules and the "preferred" shops simply follow them to keep the insurance companies' costs down.  Think about it - these cost reductions have to come from somewhere...
